Wrong propaganda being done about Transgender Bill: Law Minister
ISLAMABAD: Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar has said that the wrong propaganda is being done regarding the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill.
Addressing a press conference along with on Prime Minister’s Adviser Qamar Zaman Kaira on Thursday, he said that the opinion of the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) chairman was also sought in the matter.
“Through the bill, sexual harassment has been made a crime. The minister said that the law would stop same-sex marriages,” he added.
The minister said that it is not a new law as it was enacted in 2018. “All the political parties, including PML-N, PPP, PTI, and others, approved this law in 2018. Senator Mushtaq Ahmed Khan of the Jamaat-e-Islami has proposed an amendment to the law to prevent its misuse,” he maintained.
Azam Nazir Tarar said that transgender persons are also human beings and this legislation is meant to protect their rights, including inheritance, education, employment, health, and purchasing a property. “The use of transgender persons for begging shall be punishable under the law,” he added.
